Army Kid · Shillong

“Growing up in Shillong, I never thought of food as a product. It was a story - of soil, of season, of the hands that grew it.”

I was born and raised in Shillong - the capital of Meghalaya, tucked into the clouds of the Khasi Hills. I grew up as an Army Kid, moving between cantonments and hill stations, but Shillong was always home. The Northeast is a place where the land is alive in a way that is hard to describe to someone who hasn't felt it. The air smells of rain and pine. The markets overflow with things you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Growing up in an Army family taught me discipline, resilience, and a deep respect for the communities that hold a place together. It also meant I saw India from many angles - its diversity, its richness, and the quiet dignity of the people who grow its food. But it was always the hills of Meghalaya that called me back.

But I also watched, as I grew older, how the farmers who grew these extraordinary things were paid almost nothing for them. How a spice that took three years to mature was sold for the same price as something grown in a factory greenhouse. How the story behind the ingredient - the geography, the tradition, the care - was invisible to the person who eventually ate it.

AMA Foods is my answer to that. Amā (अमा) - a ray of the sun, light that travels from source to surface, unchanged. Registered right here in Shillong, Meghalaya, every product we carry is a tribute to the land that raised me, and to the farmers who are its true custodians.

When you open a jar of Lakadong Turmeric or grind our Malabar Black Pepper, I want you to taste the mountain. I want you to feel the distance it has travelled - not just in kilometres, but in generations of knowledge.

Our Mission

Protect the
unrepeatable.

India holds more GI-tagged agricultural products than any country in the world. Yet most of these products are sold as commodities - indistinguishable from inferior substitutes, undervalued, and at risk of disappearing.

Amā (अमा) was founded on the belief that the best way to protect India's agricultural heritage is to create a market that values it. We source exclusively from GI-certified origins, pay above-market prices to farming communities, and tell the stories that make these products irreplaceable.
